For each country we tried to include some basic facts, cultural etiquette, a day in the life of a kid who lives there, food, dance, music, art, sports, festivals, famous sites, etc. I find information on the internet including websites, articles, timelines, videos, panoramic photos, virtual tours, etc. So far I have 3 that are completed and I'm working on Puerto Rico. Please let me know if there's other countries you are interested in and I'll put it on my list. Click below to visit each site:
Senora Laub is a fabulous Spanish teacher who teaches Spanish I and II for the upper school. As part of her curriculum she teaches the students the culture of Spanish speaking countries. I helped her put together some information on a few countries. She let's the students explore the information independently, thus allowing them to see what piques their interest. Curating information like this takes a lot of time, but I really enjoy doing it. I find it exhilarating to see how much information is out there that can bring these cultures to life for our students. Every year there is more and better materials out there. One thing that is disheartening is the amount of work it takes to maintain these pages. It's surprising how often a YouTube video is taken down or a link has been moved (or removed). So please do let me know if something is amiss. That will help a lot. Thanks!

Another great site that Teresa introduced to me isWatch Know Learn. It's a library for links to excellent educational videos that have been selected by educators. WatchKnowLearn has indexed approximately 50,000 educational videos, placing them into a directory of over 5,000 categories. The videos are available without any registration or fees to teachers in the classroom, as well as parents and students at home 24/7. You can search for videos by subject and age level. Video titles, descriptions, age level information, and ratings are all edited for usefulness. Our Web site invites broad participation in a new kind of wiki system, guided by teachers.
To kick off the new school year, I thought I would share with you a useful website called Graphite. These days there are an abundance of educational mobile apps, web apps, games and websites. That's good news, but I find I can spend hours trying out different apps just to find one or two good ones that I can use with my students. Common Sense Media created Graphite to make it easier for educators to find the best apps, games, and websites for the classroom. Each app is searchable by: type, subject, age, and price. There is an expert rating and aggregated teacher rating. Each app is rated for engagement, pedagogy, and support. They include pros, cons, and bottom line, their review, how it works, and field notes (how to use it in the classroom). They've thought of everything a teacher (or parent) would want to know. The site is very easy to navigate and use. You'll find a great introduction video at the top of their home page. |
