Grymes Memorial School K-5 Computer Class Skills
The following documents are a work in progress. These are working documents, so they may include notes at the end. They outline different areas and skills we'd like our students to be exposed to before they move on to 6th grade in the upper school. The grade-level activities and projects we teach will vary each year based on input from the classroom teacher, what is going on in the classroom and school, students' interest, the success and failure of a previously taught project, and the available tech tools. Our intent is not to stick to a strict curriculum, but rather evaluate year-to-year what skills have been covered and which ones still need to be taught. Wherever possible we try and work with the classroom teacher to reinforce what is being taught in the classroom. We also try to expose the students to different applications because it's important they're comfortable learning new ones and to see how different applications compare with one another. Technology education is viewed in the following broad categories:
- Learn about technology: hardware, software, applications, the Internet, hard drive, pixels, etc.
- Learn basic technology skills: mouse skills, keyboarding, menu systems, switching between applications, switching between windows, selecting text, manipulating objects, adding images from a variety of sources, editing, etc.
- Learn how to use technology tools to create, access and interpret information and ideas : word processors, spreadsheets, presentation tools, digital photo editors, multimedia tools, websites design programs, screen capture tools, etc.
- How to use technology to learn: Google Earth to learn about the world, using online activities to learn math skills, how to find a video tutorial and the best way to use it.
- Learn how to use technology in a responsible manner: understanding copyright, plagiarism, Creative Commons attribution, citing sources, and digital citizenship
